Void

Project Type

Sculpture

Date

February 2025

In this piece, the artist explores the formation of neurons in the brain following a traumatic event. The work visualizes how the brain responds to overwhelming experiences by creating a void, isolating the memory, feeling, or event that is too intense to process. In this process, the brain forms new pathways around the trauma while simultaneously blocking direct access to it. Though neural development continues, the inactive neuron becomes a kind of void within the broader network of connections.

The sculpture offers a visual interpretation of this neurological phenomenon, using light and shadow to evoke both depth and movement despite the stillness of the form. Acrylic was chosen to reflect the permanence of these neural imprints, while the use of mother-of-pearl iridescence symbolizes the intersection of the natural and the constructed. This material choice allows the piece to feel organic, with highlights that at times dissolve the sculpture into its surroundings and shadows that give the voids weight and presence. Through this interplay, the artist invites reflection on memory, trauma, and the unseen architectures of the mind.
