Lulu
Project Type
Sculpture
Date
May 2024
Lulu is a sculptural tribute to the artist’s tía abuela Lulu, whose strength and compassion were instrumental in bringing the artist’s family (and others) from Cuba to the United States. Enshrouded in flowing, robe-like forms, Lulu’s figure stands serene and rooted, embodying the quiet power of matriarchal guidance and resilience.
From the base of the sculpture, a reef emerges, vibrant with coral-like textures and encircling fish. These elements evoke growth, memory, and migration, symbolizing the lives Lulu helped shape and the generations that continue to thrive because of her sacrifices. The reef becomes both a memorial and a living ecosystem, a visual metaphor for the legacy she cultivated in new lands.
Through Lulu, the artist honors a personal and collective history of movement, belonging, and the enduring bonds of family.
